Thumbs/Predictions of the week of April 23-29

Thumbs up: James Sensenbrenner, for being hard on illegal immigration, and proposing a balls to the wall reform that rightfully hits criminals hard on illegal immigration. The response that killed his bill? An "immigration shouldn't be a felony" strawman. Kudos James, Kudos.

Thumbs down: George Bush, for meeting with and licking the feet of Mexican President Vicente Fox. Fox's record on illegal immigrants coming to the United States, and his endorsed harsh treatment of illegal immigrants coming to Mexico is the ultimate in double standards. Couple the present deficits with Bush's desire to fill the United States with cheap labor (good for business, bad for lower middle class) which will also result in a skyrocket on demands for social welfare programs, (bad news for budget watchdogs) and any progress we've been making in turning the economy around the past 5 1/2 years is in serious jeopardy.

2006 Election Predictions:

House of Representatives

Current: 231 Republicans, 201 Democrats, 1 Independent
Projected : 223 Republicans, 209 Democrats, 1 Independent
Net Shift: +8 Democrats

United States Senate

Current: 55 Republicans, 44 Democrats, 1 Independent
Projected: 53 Republicans, 46 Democrats, 1 Independent
Net Shift: +2 Democrats

2008 Presidential Election

Projected top two Republicans (expected candidate in italics)
George Allen (R-VA)
John McCain (R-AZ)(expected 2008 Presidential Election winner)

Projected top two Democrats (expected candidate in italics)
Hilary Clinton (D-NY)
Barack Obama (D-IL)

Wildcards:
John Edwards (D-NC)
Rick Santorum (R-PA)

Have a great weekend! Check out the long rant on illegal immigration if you want... that one is just a bonus academic piece from yours truly.

Also, be sure to check in and read our weekend bloggers, Jeff Underhill on Saturday and Shawn Snyder on Sunday!

Good idea... considering we haven't even had every contributor post this week, I felt ok posting my own thumbs, but I had considered doing that, or something of a "point-counterpoint" (where part of the staff posts their opinion, and any dissenting staff posts their alternative) for a Friday opinion post.

Sorry, I am. I think a lot of the Conservatives would support Santorum, and he is a very well-spoken individual.

Definitely a lightning-rod for the left, but definitely effective as a US Senator. Tough call though for his re-election. Even though he's never been too keen on Bush, Bush's lack of popularity might do him in.

I would vote for a Allen or Santorum ballot.

If they were not the choice and it was say McCain vs. Hillary.

I would not vote. Or vote CP.

I give James Sensenbrenner a "thumbs down" for that, so... maybe you should make your thumbs up/downs a little bit more undisputable. The Bushy one was okay. I'm not mad, just giving a suggestion.

On the Bush/Fox thing. Eric, unfortunately I think Bush and Rove think this is the way to crush the Democrats at the ballot box in '06 and '08. Courting the Hispanics like they have that is.

And it is not.
