About 21,000 murders occur in the US every year.
The fight against the killing of unborn children is near and dear to many hearts, especially for Christians. Everywhere you go, you see T-shirts, buttons, and bumper stickers telling you that "Abortion is Homicide" and that "She's a Child, not a Choice." Protests outside of Planned Parenthood have become normal occurrences. People voting for a political candidate based almost solely on his or her abortion stance has also become a normal occurrence, for pro-choicers and pro-lifers alike. But it is really right to vote on issues like abortion? A difference is definitely being made by politicians, such as the new abortion ban in South Dakota, and the bill for abortion ban that was recently approved by the Louisiana Senate and House Committee. These type of bills and laws are being passed in favor of unborn children, but it was not always this way.
By the year 1965, abortion was banned in all 50 states (with a few exceptions, such as rape, incest, deformity, and the endangerment of the mother). At that time, there wasn't really a concern for the unborn child; abortion was illegalized out of concern for the mother. There were many unqualified doctors around performing abortions. It was just plain unsafe, and even early feminists like Susan B. Anthony wrote against it! By the time abortion was legalized in 1973, it was at the point in which more women's lives would be saved by allowing professional abortions than by the illegal underground abortion movement.
Because court rulings in the past were based on the mother's health, and not the unborn child's humanity, it is a bit odd to suddenly turn around and make new abortion laws concerning unborn children's rights (granted, they do have quite a few, but mommy has the ultimate say in whether her baby is born or not). Not only that, but is there really a point to it? Do we really want to vote to protect the unborn, while the born are out there suffering and nothing is being done? Do we really want to start a new underground abortion revolution? Do we really want to see pro-choice stickers and signs and T-shirts all over the place and pro-choice protests and riots accruing all accross America?
In conclusion, I'd like to end with what in my opinion is the best way to prevent abortion from occuring: adequate sex education (including the stages of a growing fetus and the effects abortion has on the fetus), sufficient birth control, available health care, and the ability for a family to support children adequately. These are the things we need to be making sure our government is providing. Some good sound Bible teachings from the Church couldn't hurt either. :)
